The ATP Washington tournament continues with the quarterfinals on Friday. The main attraction is young Rafael Jodar against former World No. 5 Lorenzo Musetti. However, that’s not the only really intriguing match on Friday at the ATP Washington event. Alejandro Tabilo, who loves playing on clay, has managed to get to the last eight in this ATP 500 tournament. He faces Ben Shelton, who is living on the edge but surviving. Alex De Minaur faces Brandon Nakashima in a very interesting and attractive ATP Washington quarterfinal. Both players are in the top 40. De Minaur just beat his fellow Australian and one of his friends on tour, Cruz Hewitt. The match looked lopsided on paper going in, and it turned out to be that way, with De Minaur cruising to a very easy straight-set victory. Nakashima scored a strong win, beating Roland-Garros semifinalist Jakub Mensik. Nakashima attended the University of Virginia, so playing in nearby Washington feels like home for him. He has a lot of fans cheering him on, and it has helped him. This will not be an easy match for De Minaur.

He has been on the tour for a few years. He is still growing into his body and his potential. He is still learning how to play. He is showing signs of making progress, having made the third round of Roland-Garros earlier this year, the first time he got that far in Paris. Taylor Fritz is a proven hardcourt player, but he hasn’t been able to solve Michelsen in two tries. Will the third time be the charm?

This is the best ATP Washington quarterfinal on Friday. Rising young star Rafael Jodar takes on top-15 player Lorenzo Musetti. This match should draw a big crowd on a Friday evening. Jodar easily defeated Kei Nishikori earlier this week. He looked like a player who is ready to make a deep run. Musetti, trying to work his way back from an injury earlier this year, needed three sets to beat a much lower-ranked player, No. 98 Aleksandar Vukic. Jodar is the more in-form player, but Musetti has been ranked as high as No. 5. He is extremely talented but struggles with injuries. If Musetti is fit and healthy, he’s a really good performer with more talent than Jodar.
