People have spent centuries trying to understand what matter is really made of. But scientists still know surprisingly little about what happens inside the heart of every atom.
To answer these questions, they are now building the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), one of the world’s most ambitious particle physics sites. Located at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York, the particle accelerator will fire electrons at protons and atomic nuclei to create an unprecedented view of their internal structure. Simply put, this is similar to how a CT scan creates detailed images of the inside of the human body.
