Two men dead after alleged murder-suicide in Plateau bar

A murder followed by a suicide is believed to have caused the deaths of two men in a bar in the Le-Plateau-Mont-Royal borough of Montreal.

Several 911 calls around 11 p.m. Friday reported gunshots at the licensed establishment located on Mont-Royal Ave., near Laval Ave.

“Major crimes investigators (SPVM) are still on site and are trying to clarify the exact causes and circumstances of this event,” said Constable Véronique Dubuc, spokesperson for the Montreal Police Service (SPVM), around 8 a.m. Saturday morning. She emphasized that “for the moment, there is nothing to indicate that the event is linked to organized crime.”

The victim is a man in his 40s, and the shooter, who took his own life, is believed to be in his 30s. The motive for the crime is currently unknown.

When police arrived, following 911 calls, customers were still fleeing the scene.

Police officers discovered the two men inside, wounded by firearms, and their deaths were pronounced at the scene, said another SPVM spokesperson, Manuel Couture. A security perimeter was quickly set up to protect the crime scene.

SPVM major crimes investigators were expected to interview witnesses throughout the day and review images captured by surveillance cameras in the area.

The SPVM investigation is now focusing on a homicide followed by a suicide, whereas initially it was a question of two suspicious deaths.
