The poster for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf has landed, and (most) fans are singing its praises. Paired with the terrifying trailer, this eerie poster brings the promise of a new classic from the legendary horror director, but there’s one detail that perfectionists can’t seem to look past.
While there are no hard-and-fast rules, the best movie posters are often subtle yet calculated in their design. While the Werwulf poster’s composition might be irksome to many, I think it’s the perfect way to set the tone for the upcoming lycanthrope horror.

The black-and-white poster features the contorted body of lead actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson among a sea of foreboding crosses and a glowing full moon. Framing his figure is the Werwulf title in a scrawled, calligraphy-style typeface. Paired with the threat “devoureth all mankynde,” the font creates a sense of unease with its sharp, imperfect edges.

So why are folks upset about the poster? Symmetry. The perfectionists among you may have already spotted that Taylor-Johnson’s hand is not centred with the moon motif. Of course, it wasn’t long before fans began ‘correcting’ the design, but I’m here to argue it’s already immaculate.

With our brains hardwired to enjoy symmetry, it’s natural that the composition of the Werwulf poster would peeve some people. I’d argue that the visual dissonance of Taylor-Johnson’s slightly offset hand is the perfect embellishment, creating a sense of subtle unease (alongside his contorted body, of course).

Like the original La La Land poster, ‘imperfections’ can make a poster iconic. Breaking free from the confines of symmetrical design is a subtle way to create visual intrigue and character. Truthfully, I’m just glad it’s not another floating head design.
