If you’re in the mood to watch a crime epic over the weekend, then Netflix probably has you covered, as The Irishman is currently streaming. From legendary director Martin Scorsese, this gangster drama boasts a stacked cast including Stephen Graham.
The film is based on Charles Brandt’s 2004 non-fiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, and depicts Frank Sheeran’s rise through a New York City crime family as he goes from truck driver to hitman.
The crime drama, which is written by Steven Zaillian, sees Scorsese reunite with past collaborators such as Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro, while the latter also appears alongside Al Pacino once again.

What did critics say about The Irishman?

The Irishman was acclaimed by critics, and received 10 nominations – including Best Picture and Best Director – at both the 92nd Academy Awards and 73rd BAFTA Awards, though it ultimately went home empty-handed at each ceremony.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the gangster epic currently has a near-perfect approval rating of 95% from 467 reviews. Its audience score is slightly lower, though it still sits at a very respectable score of 86%.
“Despite its length, The Irishman is riveting. It confirms Scorsese as one of the great American filmmakers,” opined The Australian, while The Boston Globe described the crime drama as a “masterpiece”.
“The Irishman is long, to be sure, but it’s never less than compelling – Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino and Pesci, all in their mid-to-late-70s, are each carrying a lifetime of work, with practiced ease,” noted The Seattle Times.
Rolling Stone was also full of praise, writing: “With this unmissable crime epic, you’ll be watching Scorsese at the peak of his powers directing acting giants De Niro, Pacino and Pesci and creating the movie event of the year.”

Following a limited theatrical release, The Irishman was released by Netflix in November 2019, and is still on the service now. Despite being a digital release, the film eventually got a special Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection.
