King Charles embraced one of Scotland’s most treasured traditions on Saturday as he made his annual appearance at the Mey Highland Games.
While absent from the Commonwealth Games, Charles spent the day at the Mey Highland Games, cheering on competitors, meeting local communities and even pausing to enjoy a glass of whisky.
Dressed in a traditional tartan kilt, the 77-year-old monarch was in high spirits as he arrived at the John O’Groats Showground in Caithness, greeting spectators and chatting with athletes taking part in one of the country’s best-loved summer events.
As Chieftain of the Mey Highland Games, a role he has held since 2002 after succeeding his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, he watched a packed programme of classic Highland contests celebrating Scotland’s rich heritage.
After the competition, the King crossed over to congratulate the winning team, warmly shaking hands with the participants.
Charles also met members of the Wounded Highlanders, an inspiring team of injured military veterans who continue to compete in adaptive sporting events, taking time to hear about their experiences and achievements.
No Highland Games would be complete without the iconic caber toss, and the King watched as competitors attempted to flip towering tree trunks with remarkable precision.
Traditional Highland dancers and pipe bands added to the festive atmosphere, entertaining the crowds throughout the day with colourful performances and stirring music.
He was also seen enjoying a dram of locally produced whisky which is another cherished Scottish custom while soaking up the atmosphere.
Following the festivities, the King is expected to return to the nearby Castle of Mey, where he traditionally spends part of the summer.
The historic residence, once the beloved home of the Queen Mother, has become one of Charles’s favourite Highland retreats.
He is also expected to spend time with his cousin, Lady Sarah Chatto, and her husband, Daniel Chatto.
