CINCINNATI (WKRC) – Berries sold in the Tri-State area were recalled by the Food and Drug Administration because they may be contaminated with E. coli.
According to a recall report from the Food and Drug Administration, blueberries sold at Publix grocery stores in eight states, including one in the Tri-State area, were recalled because they may be contaminated with E. coli.
“E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) that can cause illness characterized by severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody) and vomiting,” the release read. “While most healthy individuals recover within a week, some infections may result in a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), particularly in young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.”
The affected products were sold in eight states, including Kentucky, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The affected products include:
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06453
- GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12053
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10-ounce, UPC 41415-06753
- GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48-ounce, UPC 41415-12153
The recall began on July 3, but was expanded on July 29 to include other products out of an abundance of caution.
Customers who purchased the products were advised to not consume them under any circumstances, and to return them to Publix for a full refund.
