NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said one person is dead and multiple others were hospitalized after being hit by a vehicle in downtown Nashville.
MNPD said 87-year-old Thomas Cahill, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a Ford Fusion, ran the red light at the 4th and Broadway intersection in downtown Nashville and hit four people.
The crash left one person dead and three others hospitalized.
The person who died was identified as Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia. Investigators say Wedlock died after arriving at the hospital.
Another victim is from Jacksonville, Florida. He is in critical condition and went into surgery. A third victim was from Knoxville, and she is in serious but non-critical condition, Aaron said.
Police said the fourth victim, a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, TN, is in critical yet stable condition at Vanderbilt.
Police said Cahill was driving with his 90-year-old wife and his wife’s caregiver. Cahill, and his wife, were both hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Police spoke with the caregiver. She said she was on the phone in the backseat. The caregiver said she looked up as she heard pedestrians being struck.
Investigators are working to determine what led up to the crash. Police said Cahill did not show signs of impairment.
Aaron said downtown cameras captured the moment the Ford Fusion collided with pedestrians in the crosswalk, who did have the right of way to cross at the time.
Police and Nashville Fire personnel arrived at the scene quickly and began assessing the incident and the those involved.
MNPD shared the ages of those involved:
- Critical Condition with non-life threatening injuries: 87-year-old Thomas Cahill driver from Bowling Green, Kentucky
- Deceased: 58-year-old Timothy Wedlock from Australia
- Critical Injuries: 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida
- Non-Critical Injuries: 21-year-old female from Knoxville, Tennessee
- Non-Critical Injuries: 58-year-old female from Parsons, Tennessee
The MNPD Traffic Division is investigating.
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell released a statement about the incident, calling it an “incredibly tragic event.”
This is an incredibly tragic event, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families impacted by this horrible moment.
Our first responders and local medical professionals are working to aid the people injured, and crews are on the scene now to investigate exactly what occurred and how. Right now, it’s unclear why the 87-year old driver failed to stop for the pedestrians in the crosswalk.
Our main goals now are to take care of the victims and to keep everyone else safe.
