Leeds United target Igor Paixão as Marseille demand €50m

Leeds United are exploring a potential move for Marseille winger Igor Paixão as they assess attacking reinforcements ahead of the new Premier League season.

According to Foot Mercato, the Brazilian is among several attacking options being considered by the Elland Road hierarchy, although he is not currently the club’s leading priority. Journalist Santi Aouna reports that discussions have already taken place with the 26-year-old’s representatives as Leeds evaluate the feasibility of a transfer.

Despite the initial contact, Marseille’s asking price is currently the biggest obstacle to any agreement.

Marseille’s valuation remains a major hurdle

The Ligue 1 club are reportedly demanding around €50 million for Paixão, having signed the Brazilian from Feyenoord for €30 million last summer.

Leeds, however, are understood to value the winger closer to €30-35 million. That leaves a gap of between €15 million and €20 million, making a deal difficult unless one side adjusts its position during negotiations.

The valuation difference also explains why Leeds are not actively pursuing the move at this stage, despite maintaining an interest in the player.

Long-standing interest could be revived

Paixão is not a new name on Leeds United’s radar. The Premier League side were heavily linked with the winger during the previous summer transfer window and competed with Marseille for his signature before he eventually chose the French club.

That long-term admiration has not disappeared, with Leeds once again monitoring his situation as they search for additional quality in the final third.

Whether that interest develops into a formal offer is likely to depend on Marseille’s willingness to lower their demands or Leeds deciding the Brazilian is worth a significantly higher investment.

Key Points

  • Leeds United are interested in Marseille winger Igor Paixão.
  • Initial discussions have taken place with the player’s representatives.
  • Marseille are demanding around €50 million for the Brazilian.
  • Leeds currently value the winger at €30-35 million.
  • The sizeable valuation gap means a transfer is not considered advanced.

What’s next?

Leeds United are expected to continue assessing attacking targets before deciding whether to intensify their pursuit of Paixão. Unless the gap between the two clubs’ valuations narrows, negotiations are unlikely to move beyond the exploratory stage. Marseille, meanwhile, remain under no immediate pressure to sell after signing the winger only last summer.
