Max Greenfield says “New Girl” revival is ‘happening,’ he’s ‘seen scripts’— but can he be trusted?

Max Greenfield is keeping the hope of a New Girl revival alive — kind of.

The Neighborhood actor, who played Schmidt on all seven seasons of the beloved Fox sitcom, claimed that he and his castmates could reunite for more episodes of the show — but said so in a joking manner suggesting it might all be a bit. 

“I’m not gonna play the game,” Greenfield said on the Today show after watching his costars Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris avoid honest answers to similar lines of inquiry on the same show. “As far as I know, it’s happening.”

Greenfield then addressed recent comments from New Girl‘s creator, Elizabeth Meriwether, about her thoughts on a reunion.

“Liz was very concerned,” he said. “She texted us, she was like, ‘I said these things in press.’ And she was like, ‘I don’t know if there’s any more stories to tell.'”

Greenfield said that Meriwether was lying, and that she’s sitting on multiple episodes of new New Girl scripts. “She’s full of it. I’ve seen scripts,” he said. “She’s written them. They’re amazing. She’s a very talented writer.”

However, Greenfield’s entire conversation surrounding New Girl echoes the sarcastic tone that his castmates Johnson and Morris have adopted as part of a running bit about unresolved animosity among the cast and crew.

In a previous Today interview, Morris said, “Hollywood is a crazy place, it really is. And for the fans out there, just know that Jake Johnson has become a part of Hollywood now, he won’t do the reunion. I wanna do the reunion because I love the fans, I love you so much, but Jake Johnson, the opposite.”

Meanwhile, Johnson jokingly blamed Morris for the hold-up in his own Today interview, claiming, “Here’s the real truth about the reunion: I go, ‘I’m in.’ Greenfield said, ‘I’m in.’ Lamorne said, ‘All jokes aside, I don’t respect anybody at the Today show. I don’t respect what they do, I don’t respect fans, I don’t respect humans, because I am greater than.'”

Meriwether recently gave a more earnest answer about a potential New Girl revival in an interview with The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast. “I don’t know. It would be exciting,” she said. “I really would have to have my head around why we were doing it. But I do love those people. I text them, I wish I saw them more.”

She added, “They’re always like, ‘Well, if Liz wants to do the reunion, then we will.’ And I’m like, ‘You guys, that is not how the world works.'”

Earlier this month, Meriwether went along with the cast’s faux-hostile interplay in an Instagram video.

“I got a question about the New Girl reboot, and I gave a really weird answer to a journalist, because I wasn’t being truthful,” she said. “The truth is that there’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes drama, there’s been a lot of hurt feelings, there’ve been some pretty explicit text messages sent around of body parts, and not the ones you’d expect. Very erotic. And Hannah [Simone] is just, I don’t even recognize her anymore. She’s just lost it, really.”
