Chelsea Green Wins Interim WWE Women’s Title in Ladder Match at SummerSlam After Ripley’s Injury

Chelsea Green won a five-woman ladder match on Night 2 of SummerSlam on Sunday to become the interim WWE women’s champion.
Green got the better of four of the top women’s Superstars that SmackDown has to offer, outlasting Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Tiffany Stratton and Lash Legend.
The ladder match was announced when it was determined that WWE women’s champion Rhea Ripley would not be cleared from a knee injury in time to compete at SummerSlam.
Rather than stripping Ripley of the title, the decision was made to put the interim WWE Women’s Championship up for grabs with the winner then facing Ripley in a unification match once she is cleared.
A series of qualifying matches were then held on SmackDown to determine which five Superstars would battle for the chance to be interim champ.
The long-running rivalry between Flair and Cargill spilled over into qualifying, as they both got involved in each other’s matches.
Charlotte attacked Jade during her qualifying match against Nia Jax, which allowed Cargill to qualify for the ladder match. Jax was given another chance to qualify the following week against Flair, but Jade returned the favor by attacking Charlotte.
In the other qualifiers, Stratton defeated Jacy Jayne, Chelsea Green took down Kiana James and Lash Legend prevailed over Giulia.
By virtue of her win in the ladder match on Sunday, Green shocked the WWE Universe and got her first taste of WWE Women’s Championship gold.
Green is a two-time women’s United States champion, but she reached a new level at SummerSlam, and an eventual clash with Ripley now awaits.
