📰 Buc-ee’s sues Beavercreek store: Our Cornelius Frolik wrote a story that has grabbed a lot of attention this weekend. Buc-ee’s, the wildly popular chain of travel centers, has sued a small carryout in Beavercreek, claiming the store’s cartoon beaver logo infringes on its trademark.

The lawsuit: Buc-ee’s alleges in a new lawsuit in federal court that Beaver’s Mini Mart at 1592 Hanes Road has a logo that too closely resembles the chain’s distinctive logo, which has a smiling cartoon beaver with a red baseball hat. Read more specifics about the lawsuit here.

Recent media attention: Comedian John Oliver, on a recent episode of his show Last Week Tonight on HBO, had a segment that criticized and mocked Buc-ee’s trademark infringement lawsuits, and he dared the company to sue him for creating a similar logo that says “Buc-off.”

👷Modernizing the Fraze Pavilion: Samantha Wildow told us that, while the city of Kettering’s draft Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Master Plan proposes closing the Kettering Ice Arena, other recommendations include making improvements to the Fraze Pavilion to modernize the facility.

Funding: These and other parks improvements could potentially be funded by a tax levy, but the city did not have any specific recommendations around funding yet.

Working with architect firm: The city worked with a local architect firm, LWC Incorporated, to develop concepts for enhancements to the Fraze Pavilion, according to city of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Director Bill Tschirhart.

Cincinnati Children’s Centerville has reopened after almost a year-long closure. MICHAEL KURTZ / STAFF
🧑⚕️Cincinnati Children’s reopens location: Our Michael Kurtz reported that, after almost a year of construction, Cincinnati Children’s Centerville reopened and is accepting patients.

The closure: Operations ceased at the office, 6555 Clyo Road in Washington Twp., on Aug. 8, 2025, after severe moisture inside and brick damage outside was discovered, requiring a complete exterior overhaul and parking lot updates. At the time, a Cincinnati Children’s spokesperson said mold did not appear to be an issue in spite of the moisture.

Renovations: The 12,990-square-foot facility underwent renovations including full replacement of the brick exterior as well as site improvements to enhance the grounds and parking lot, according to Cincinnati Children’s. Other improvements included regrading the ground around the building, new landscaping, and repainting interior walls. Cincinnati Children’s took over the location in 2023, at which time the interior was renovated.
🗞️Updating a big story: Later in the week, Jessica Orozco reported that several Haitians in Springfield have received letters from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security telling them to go to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cincinnati field office for an “in-person check-in,” during which they are outfitted with ankle monitors, according to local advocates.
