Severe flash flooding in the northern Foothills prompted emergency response in Surry County. Mount Airy issued a State of Emergency at 10 p.m. Saturday.
The statement said the flooding has caused significant damage to public infrastructure, roads, utilities, public facilities, and private property. Many roads and bridges are closed around the city.
WXII in Winston-Salem reported water rescues and flooding in homes began around midnight, and 5 to 10 inches fell within a few hour. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Virginia, report that the Ararat River crested at nearly 29 feet around 3 a.m.
Byron Isaacs, the Emergency Management Coordinator for Surry County said crews conducted six water rescues on stranded vehicles Saturday evening.
The National Weather Service told WXII that water levels have dropped about four feet as of last night, but cautioned residents to remain vigilant.
