Crews respond to 6-alarm building fire on Sea Spray Lane in Foster City; several firefighters injured

FOSTER CITY, Calif. (KGO) — San Mateo County firefighters are battling a large building fire in Foster City that quickly escalated to a 6-alarm response on Sunday.

The fire was first reported around 2:30 p.m. at 815 Sea Spray Lane.

Multuple ambulances and firetrucks were dispatched to the scene of a condominium complex where firefighters were faced with a combination of flames, winds and hot weather.

Authorities say all residents, including their pets, were safely evacuated from the complex. Some residents reportedly had to be rescued from their windows on the third floor of the building.

No resident injuries were reported.

According to police, four firefighters suffered minor injuries during operations. One suffered burns and two experienced smoke inhalation, with two of those firefighters being transported to a local hospital for treatment.

At one point during the response, a firefighter called “mayday” when he lost sight of his partner while inside the building, but authorities say he was safely evacuated.

Firefighters say the fire started on the first floor and quickly worked its way up to the third floor.

Operations are expected to continue for several hours.

Thick, heavy smoke is still in the area and those living nearby are advised to keep their windows and doors closed, the Foster City Police Department said. All others are asked to avoid the area. Smoke from the fire could be seen from as far as Oakland.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
