National Night Out is an annual event held on the first Tuesday in August aimed to strengthen the relationship between communities and law enforcement across the country, since 1984. Recently towns have begun to host their celebrations later to take advantage of milder temperatures.
The observation is designed to also heighten crime and drug prevention awareness while celebrating community with block parties, parades and events.
There will be events held across the Triangle and beyond to promote neighborhood camaraderie and a more caring place to live.
August 4
Raleigh:
There are 21 locations in Raleigh that will host events ranging from 3 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. North Hills will host the event in the commons area from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. Oakwood Commons Park will host from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Renaissance Park will host from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For a full list of events visit the city of Raleigh’s National Night Out webpage.
In observance of National Night Out, the Raleigh Police Department asks residents to leave their porch light on from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Chapel Hill:
The Chapel Hill Police Department is hosting National Night Out at the Hargraves Center at 216 N. Roberson St, Chapel Hill. The event will take place from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., with food, games and fun.
Carrboro:
National Night Out will be held at Carrboro Town Commons at 301 W. Main Street, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. There will be food, games, activities including a dunk tank and many organizations with safety information and community engagement opportunities.
Johnston County:
The Johnston County celebration will be hosted by the Smithfield Police Department, in partnerships with local fire departments, EMS and community sponsors – Steven Sausage and Lifespring Church.
The event will take place from 5:00p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Smithfiled Community Park at 600 M. Durwood Stephenson Parkway. The event will include food, bounce houses, safety information, and K9 demonstrations.
August 11
Hoke County:
National Night Out for Hoke County has been rescheduled. Due to forecasted weather on Aug.4, the event will now take place on Tuesday, Aug. 11 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. The event will be held at East Hoke Middle School at 4702 Fayetteville Road, Raeford.
August 16
Fayetteville
There will be over 20 events scheduled for National Night Out across Fayetteville on Sunday, August 16.
4 p.m. Events:
- St. Luke AME Church, 533 Hillsboro St. 4-6 p.m. Crime Prevention, food, games.
- Cross Creek, Millstream Rd. 4-8 p.m. Food, back to school drive.
5 p.m. Events:
- Tera Gardens, 233 Law Rd. 5-7p.m. Bounce house.
- Whispering Pines, 108 First Street. 5-8 p.m. Community gathering.
- Friends of Haymount, 1921 Woodrow St. 5-7 p.m. Games, resources, free food for first responders.
- Oakridge General Lee Park, 1320 General Lee Ave. 5:30-7:30 p.m. Food trucks, vendors, school supply drive.
- 6 p.m. Events:
- Broadwell-Seabook, 1530 Slater Ave. 6-8 p.m. Mission BBQ, local resource officers.

September 12
Warren County:
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Warrenton Police Department are hosting Warren County Night to Unite on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Warren County Courthouse Square at 109 S. Main St, Warrenton. There will be activities, hot dogs and drinks provided. There will also be vendors providing safety resources.
October 5
Wake Forest:
On Monday, Oct. 5, Wake Forest will host National Night Out in the parking lot of the Joyner Park Community Center at 701 Harris Road from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. The event will include a DJ, games, food, and special prizes. Fire, police and EMS will have vehicle displays, and a variety of safety and crime prevention booths. Wake Forest celebrates National Night Out the first Monday in October to take advantage of cooler temperatures.
October 6
Durham:
Durham schedules their observation the first Tuesday in October to take advantage of cooler temperatures. The Durham Police Department will host their event at the DPD headquarters at 602 E. Main Street from 4 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Meet local first responders, games, food, community resources and engagment opportunities available.
Edgecombe County:
Downtown Tarboro will host the county’s National Night Out event at Courthouse Square, at 311 N. Main Street from 6 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. There will be a live DJ, free hot dogs and drinks, games and activities.
