Colorado Springs Airport confirms 22 Denver-bound flights were diverted due to severe weather
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – UPDATE: Colorado Springs Airport officials confirm that 22 aircraft were diverted from Denver International Airport to Colorado Springs due to severe weather in the Denver area.
Of those aircraft, officials said four were international flights.
The first diverted aircraft arrived at Colorado Springs Airport at about 4:40 p.m. Monday, officials said. The final diverted aircraft arrived at about 8 p.m.
Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel provided medical assistance to five passengers during the event, officials confirmed. One was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
As of 10 p.m., all diverted aircraft have departed the airport and the diversion event was complete.
ORIGINAL COVERAGE: 29 aircraft were diverted to the Colorado Springs Airport, and one passenger was taken to a hospital after severe weather in the Denver area on Monday night.
According to officials with the airport, severe weather caused 25 domestic commercial flights and four international commercial flights to be diverted from Denver International Airport to the Colorado Springs Airport.
Multiple of the impacted flights experienced heavy turbulence due to wind. Officials said several passengers reported medical concerns and were evaluated by medical crews on scene.
As of 8:45 p.m., officials said five passengers recieved medical care, and one person was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department is at the airport alongside additional emergency response resources as additional aircraft arrive.
At this time, officials say the Colorado Springs Airport remains open.
The 11 Alert Weather Team said a cold front caused wind speeds of approximately 40 miles per hour in the Denver area Monday night.
