Logan Cooley gave Martin St-Louis an unexpected glimpse Tuesday while skating beside Ivan Demidov in Brossard.
The Utah Mammoth center joined a summer workout at the CN Sports Complex, immediately drawing attention from Canadiens fans in attendance.
There’s no reported trade discussion behind the appearance. Cooley may simply share a trainer, friendship or offseason skating group with Demidov.
Still, the sight carried weight because Montreal’s largest remaining roster need sits at second-line center.
Kent Hughes has yet to add a proven option who can consistently support Demidov and give the Canadiens another dangerous line behind Nick Suzuki’s unit.
Cooley represents the exact profile Montreal lacks: speed through the neutral zone, creativity with the puck and the vision to feed an attacking winger.

One summer session can’t reveal real chemistry, but it gave fans a clear image of how Demidov might look beside a young offensive center.
Cooley can carry the puck through traffic and create off controlled entries. That would let Demidov attack space rather than handle every stage of the possession himself.
The Canadiens currently have internal options, but none offers Cooley’s combination of youth, pace and high-end offensive upside.
Michael Hage remains central to Montreal’s long-term plans. Asking him to solve the second-line role immediately would place heavy pressure on a player still developing.
Hughes also has no reason to treat Cooley’s presence as an opening. Utah controls the 22-year-old center, and there’s no indication he is available.
The more useful takeaway belongs to Demidov. He’s already back in Brossard, working alongside NHL talent and preparing for a larger offensive assignment under St-Louis.
Montreal fans can enjoy the possibility without turning the skate into a transaction. Cooley’s visit was real, but the trade connection remains imagination.
Until Hughes finds another center, any skilled player sharing the ice with Demidov will create noise. Cooley simply produced the most enticing version yet.
