How Princess Eugenie’s Newborn Daughter Alters the British Royal Family’s Line of Succession

Everything in the British monarchy has an order and a consequence, so you bet the birth of Princess Eugenie’s third child has changed things for the family—particularly when it comes to the line of succession.

Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed their third child, a baby girl, on August 3. She joins big brothers August, 5, and Ernest, 3. None of the kids have royal titles, as British royal custom dictates that titles are passed down through the male line only, and Brooksbank is a private citizen, not a royal. Furthermore, royal titles like prince or princess are restricted to the children and male-line grandchildren of the reigning monarch, so Eugenie’s kids do not qualify.

Having said all this, Eugenie’s baby girl’s birth did prompt a shift in the line of succession to the British throne. She now holds the 15th spot in the line of succession, following her two brothers. This means that the kids’ uncle Prince Edward (the youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth II), has moves down to the 16th spot. Edward’s children, James, Earl of Wessex, and Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, stand at 17th and 18th in line. and Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, is now 19th in line.

As readers know, Prince William is first in line to the throne after his father, the reigning monarch, King Charles III. William is followed by his three children, who are followed by Prince Harry. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet then, are 7th and 8th in line to the throne, followed by their controversial uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and then his eldest daughter, Eugenie’s older sister, Princess Beatrice. Eugenie comes after Beatrice’s two daughters.
