With the Boston Red Sox making the decisions they did at Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, moving on from some of their top prospects in a deal for Adley Rutschman, as well as a separate trade involving Marcelo Mayer, it posed the question of what the organization plans to do in the future with Franklin Arias.
Arias, a young shortstop who has made some impressive strides over his professional career, looks to be a part of the Red Sox’s future in a big way.
Unfortunately for the Red Sox, some top prospects haven’t performed well at the big-league level when called upon, but at just 20 years old in Double-A and Triple-A, Arias has really swung the bat at a high level.
He’s slashing .310/.398/.578 on the year with 21 home runs.
It seemed like keeping him around was something that Craig Breslow wanted to do throughout the deadline, and he accomplished that. However, it doesn’t sound like he wants to put any pressure on him potentially making his debut over the next few months.
“I hate to put those types of expectations on a 20-year-old,” said Breslow of Arias, per MLB.com.
“What I am very excited to say is that every challenge that he has faced, he’s met, which is pretty incredible for someone his age and what he’s done at each level. I just feel like we’ll continue to take note of what he’s doing. We’ll continue to put him in the best development environment that we can, and if he is the person who can help us, then we’ll have that conversation when it comes time.”
Asking a 20-year-old to come up during the middle of a major playoff push would be a questionable decision from Breslow, but if Arias is as good as people think he can be, it might not be out of the question just yet.
The Red Sox will obviously have to determine how things look over the next month or so before making that decision, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll get the call right now.
