Andy Reid on injuries, Mahomes in preseason after Friday’s Chiefs camp

The ninth full-team practice of Kansas City Chiefs training camp took place on a sunny day in St. Joe. The team worked for a full two hours on the grass fields at Missouri Western State University.

After its conclusion, head coach Andy Reid provided an injury update, one that is still lengthier than anyone in Chiefs Kingdom would like to see.

“One positive about these injuries is there’s nothing that the guys aren’t coming back from,” Reid assured local media. “But we got some nicks and bruises.”

Players that did not practice

Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa (groin)

Defensive end Ashton Gillotte (hamstring)

Right guard Trey Smith (Hip)

“His hip was bothering him,” Reid said of Smith, who missed his first practice of camp on Friday. “[We] sent him to a specialist just to have it checked out. Precautionary, he’s going to be okay.”

Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (Knee)

“L’Jarius, just like we did when he was here before, we’re managing his knee,” Reid told reporters. “We know the problem, and we manage through that.”

Linebacker Drue Tranquill (Back)

“Like last year, he gets low-back tightness,” Reid described the veteran. “Some soreness so we’re just calming him down.”

Wide receiver Xavier Worthy (shoulder)

“Xavier’s making progress with the shoulder,” Reid shared.

Players that partially participated in practice

Cornerback Mansoor Delane (Shoulder)

Wide receiver Rashee Rice (Knee)

“Delane got good work today, Rashee got good work today,” Reid shared about two players working back towards 100%.

Unlike Rice, Delane has been wearing a non-contact jersey and has not participated in live-contact drills. Rice has been making progress each day throughout camp from a physical standpoint.

Wide receiver Cyrus Allen (Shin bruise)

The rookie wideout took the field in pads for the first time since he left Monday’s practice due to injury. He was not seen in drills that went against a defense, avoiding contact in only his second practice of camp in pads.

“Ease him back in,” Reid said of Allen. “He did a good job when he was back in there, so that’s a positive.”

“He’s at all the meetings; he’s focused in, he wants to get out there, he doesn’t want to miss,” Reid continued. “He’s been working hard; we’ll just ease him back in like I said.”

Patrick Mahomes likely not playing preseason Week 1

Coach Reid was asked about his thoughts on Mahomes starting in the team’s first preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday, August 15th.

“There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him,” Reid said. “And percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I’ll play him the second or third game; I don’t know that, but percentages probably lean against doing that.

“We got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work,” Reid elaborated. “So the more reps they get, the better.”

The Chiefs will have one more padded practice on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. before a rest day on Sunday.
