Liverpool agree deal to sign Barcelona defender

Shock news has emerged on much needed defensive depth for Liverpool late on Friday evening.
Manager Andoni Iraola bemoaned the lack of bodies in the defensive unit, and it now looks like the club are plugging those holes.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo will join the club on loan with a verbal agreement already in place:
“EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool agree loan deal to sign Ronald Araujo from Barcelona, HERE WE GO! Verbal agreement club to club with Barça now approved by director Deco. New centre back for Liverpool with a surprise bomba.”
Since breaking into the first team in 2020/21, Araujo has established himself as one of Barcelona’s captains, winning two La Liga titles (2022/23, 2024/25) and the Copa del Rey so far.
His ability to also play as a right fullback has surely influenced Liverpool to agree the very surprising deal.
The caveat is that 27-year-old has had a fairly injury-riddled career thus far, but a loan signing means that Liverpool are not risking too much by bringing him in.
He extended his Barcelona contract through 2031 back in January 2025, making the loan exit a surprising development to say the least.
It is believed to be a straight loan, with further details likely come in due course.
