Attica, N.Y. (WHAM) — Just before 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, when most were asleep, a surveillance camera at Attica Wine & Spirits captured Nathaniel Salverson using a cinder block to break into the business, according to police.
“I received a phone call from my tenant upstairs that heard heard a loud bang and the alarm was going off,” owner John Perry said. “So, I immediately grabbed my handgun and headed down here.”
When he got there, Perry said, the front door was shattered, with glass all over the ground and his security alarm ringing.
“The Attica Police Department pulled in within seconds after I pulled in,” Perry said. “We both entered the building with our guns drawn, not knowing what we’re gonna find. We came in the building, found the building was clear.”
Perry said he checked his security cameras and was shocked at what he saw.
“It’s my belief that it’s so loud that it shocked him, he panicked, wasn’t expecting that loud alarm and just grabbed a bottle, first bottle he saw, off the shelf and ran back out the door,” Perry said. “He ran out the door about 50 yards, and he left the bottle that he that he stole in the entrance way of a building down the street.”
Police said they arrested Nathan Salverson on Thursday morning. He was charged with burglary, criminal mischief, petit larceny and possession of burglar’s tools. He was released after his arraignment.
“The replacement glass is going to cost me a little over $1,000, I believe,” Perry said. “(That’s) money probably that I probably won’t see. They call it a cost of doing business.”
The arrest was Salverson’s eighth of the year, according to police.
Perry blames bail reform for the incident.
“These criminals know that they can do this type of thing and there’s no repercussions,” he said. “They get arraigned and they get released, they get arraigned, they get released.”
