Guy Pearce’s Forgotten Thriller Beats $1.5 Billion Blockbuster to Claim Streaming Crown

The Paramount+ streaming charts have largely been dominated by a handful of movies in the past year. For several months, Gladiator II held on to the crown; the action movie Novocaine was the only other title that showed somewhat similar results months later. During this entire time, the blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick would hover inside the top five, and sometimes take the number one spot itself. However, a new challenger has shown up in the form of the Guy Pearce-led thriller The Infernal Machine, which was released to minimal attention theatrically in 2022.

According to FlixPatrol, it was the number one movie on Paramount+ across the globe on October 5, ahead of Maverick. There is no comparing the two titles in terms of box office, which only exemplifies what a democratic space streaming can sometimes be. Maverick famously “saved Hollywood” in 2022, grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. It also earned excellent reviews and went on to score a Best Picture nod at the Oscars. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Maverick was acclaimed for its aerial sequences and for its emotionally resonant story.

Kosinski went on to replicate a similar model in the world of Formula One racing, with his new hit, F1. Starring Brad Pitt, the movie outgrossed the likes of Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in its box office run, grossing over $620 million globally. Pearce, on the other hand, is coming off an Oscar nomination for his performance in the period epic The Brutalist, which made $50 million worldwide and became one of last year’s most acclaimed movies. He stars as a paranoid author in a self-imposed exile in The Infernal Machine, directed by Andrew Hunt.

Guy Pearce Will Next Be Seen in ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’

The movie holds a 37% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Pearce will be seen this week in the Netflix thriller The Woman in Cabin 10, starring Keira Knightley. Directed by Simon Stone and based on the novel of the same name by Ruth Ware, The Woman in Cabin 10 will be released on Netflix on October 10. Meanwhile, you can check out The Infernal Machine on Paramount+, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
