Winter Weather Warning as 10 Inches of Snow To Hit

Americans in multiple states have been issued winter weather-related alerts from the National Weather Service (NWS) as of early Tuesday, with up to 10 inches of snow expected in some parts of the country and other areas facing frost and freeze conditions.

Why It Matters

In Alaska, the NWS cautioned strong snow and winds could lead to reduced visibility, while several other states across the Midwest could see frost and freeze that could damage outdoor vegetations.

What To Know

In a winter weather advisory, the NWS said total snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches would be possible for Alaska’s Atigun Pass, along with winds gusting as high as 55 miles per hour.

The agency also cautioned that “very strong” wind and snow could result in visibility as low as one half mile at times.

“Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions,” the alert—which was in effect until 10 a.m. AKDT Thursday at the time of writing—said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.”

Elsewhere, freeze warnings and frost advisories spanned several states including parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Portions of north-central and northeast Wisconsin could expect sub-freezing temperatures in the middle 20s to lower 30s, according to a freeze warning for the area in force from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the alert said.

North-central and northwest Minnesota, as well as northeast and southeast North Dakota could see temperatures as low as 24, the NWS said.

Inland areas of central and western Upper Michigan could see sub-freezing temperatures as low as 28, according to the agency.

Parts of central, north central, northwest, and south central Wyoming could see temperatures between 26 and 32 early on Tuesday morning, the NWS said, while portions of Idaho, including eastern Magic Valley, were expected to see temperatures as low as 27.
