The Traitors finally returns to screens this week with a fresh star-studded version of the hit BBC programme. Irish actress Ruth Codd is among the list of famous faces who will make their way into the castle with the chance to prove themselves as either a Faithful or a Traitor. The 29-year-old had her right leg amputated below the knee after suffering an injury.

The celebrity edition of the game of deception and betrayal will feature 19 stars including actor and broadcaster Sir Stephen Fry and Olympian Tom Daley. Host Claudia Winkleman previously said: “We’re incredibly lucky these brilliant people have said yes. I’d love to say we’ll take it easy on them and they’ll just wander round the castle and eat toast for a couple of weeks but that would be a lie.”

Ruth Codd is an Irish actress, best known for her portrayal of Anya in the Netflix thriller series The Midnight Club. She also starred in the horror series The Fall of the House of Usher. Prior to her acting debut, Ruth was a professional make-up artist and barber.

After losing her job during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ruth started posting videos on social media platform TikTok and soon saw immense success from her content. She shared a variety of videos, including comedy skits. But she later focused on content surrounding disability awareness.

Born in Wexford, Ireland, Ruth played football as a teenager but seriously injured her foot when she was aged 15. When she was 23, she had her right leg amputated below the knee due to additional complications which originated from her previous foot injury.

After years of undergoing multiple surgeries, Codd make the decision to have her leg amputated as a way to relieve the pain and gain more control over her life. She has since learned to use a prosthetic leg and continues to use her platforms to raise awareness about disabilities.

Speaking to the Irish Examiner in 2022, Ruth said her injury is one of her greatest life challenges. She said: “My injury is the greatest challenge I’ve faced in my life so far.

“I injured it playing soccer at the age of 15. It never healed correctly so until I was 23, I was on and off crutches, getting loads of operations. Because of nerve damage and chronic pain, I chose to get it amputated. It took eight years of my life, constantly going in and out of hospital.

“My whole life revolved around trying to heal my leg. For years, I didn’t see it getting any better. I was stuck in a really bad mindset and I was pissed off at life. When I made the decision to amputate it, things finally started to turn around. It was a relief. I could get on my life.

“I was just messing around in school and fell over playing soccer, which is the worst part because I don’t even like soccer. At least I could have gone out in blaze of glory doing something that I loved but – no!”

Ruth is trading the acting world to take part in one of the most popular shows on television. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, The Celebrity Traitors will air on Wednesday, October 8 on BBC One and iPlayer.

Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, BBC unscripted director Syeda Irtizaali said of the show: “It was a real pleasure to cast this series. I think where we started with was we wanted to have a really broad range of people, obviously, but we also wanted people that were real fans of the show, that really understood it.

“I was worried about it; I was worried about how they were going to play it compared to members of the public, but we have nothing to worry about. They really play the game, and some of the things that you’ll see them doing are extraordinary; that’s all I’m going to say. It’s well worth the wait.”

The Celebrity Traitors airs Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer
