3 takeaways from Seattle Mariners’ ALDS Game 3 win

MLB Network insider Jon Morosi checked in after the Seattle Mariners’ 8-4 win in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Tuesday night, a victory that gives the M’s a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five series.

Here are three takeaways Morosi covered from the field after the game at Comerica Park in his latest instant reaction video for Seattle Sports, which you can watch at the top of this post.
Pressure on the bases
The Mariners did a lot of damage with the long ball on Tuesday night, with Eugenio Suárez, J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh all going yard. But there was a good sign with how they first touched home plate.
Victor Robles bolted home from third base after an error resulted in a throw home getting past Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler.
“I love the way that aggressive baserunning played a huge role for the Mariners,” Morosi said. “Victor Robles scoring the first run of the night with a very aggressive baserunning play – it’s that type of manufacturing of runs that certainly bodes well for the Mariners not just in Game 4 but going forward, as well.”

Next up for Seattle Mariners
After the game, Mariners manager Dan Wilson announced his starting pitcher for Game 4 at 12:08 p.m. Wednesday in Detroit: third-year right-hander Bryce Miller.
Mariners to start Bryce Miller for Game 4 of ALDS; start time set
Miller was one of the best starters in the American League in 2024, but it was a rough 2025 regular season for him due to some elbow issues that landed him on the injured list a pair of times.
Miller got a vote of confidence from one of the stars of Tuesday night, though.
“Logan Gilbert told me after the game that right now, Bryce Miller’s stuff is as good as it has ever been,” Morosi said. “A very good sign indeed for the Seattle Mariners.”
Miller had been talked about as a potential bullpen option in the postseason before 2025 All-Star Bryan Woo encountered right pectoral inflammation and was left off of Seattle’s ALDS roster.
Gilbert, meanwhile, gave the Mariners six innings of one-run ball with seven strikeouts to get the win Tuesday.
Still a need for urgency
The Mariners’ win Tuesday means they now have two chances to get the deciding win in the ALDS. But as Morosi pointed out, winning Wednesday would be a very good idea with the threat of facing Tarik Skubal, the favorite to win the AL Cy Young Award for a second straight year, for a fourth time in 2025 and second time in this series.
Seattle hasn’t lost a game yet that Skubal has pitched against them this season, but the idea of beating Skubal four times in one year seems daunting.
“The Mariners’ win ensures there will be more baseball this month at T-Mobile Park,” Morosi said. “Game 4 on Wednesday here in Detroit determines if that game is Game 3 potentially of the ALCS or a Game 5 of the Division Series, which would be against Tarik Skubal, so some urgency for the Mariners. They are certainly optimistic after a Game 3 win, but they know there is more work to do.”
