Robin Wright & Olivia Cooke Drama ‘The Girlfriend’ Tops 25 Million Viewers Worldwide On Prime Video

EXCLUSIVE: Taylor Swift is a fan of Prime Video’s The Girlfriend, and she’s not alone. The series has now topped the 25M viewer mark on the streamer, Deadline can reveal.

The psychological thriller is based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name and stars Robin Wright, Olivia Cooke and Laurie Davidson. It dropped on streaming on Sept 10, with Prime Video launching it across its worldwide footprint.

Deadline has seen the stats and as well as notching over 25M individual viewers globally, the drama has quickly become the number-one new scripted series on Prime Video in the UK.

Superstar Taylor Swift gave the series a plug on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week, which can only help the numbers, but it was already faring well. Globally, it now ranks in the top ten Prime Video series released this year.

Per the synopsis, the six-part limited series follows Laura (Wright), a woman who seemingly has it all; a glittering career, a loving husband, and her precious son, Daniel (Davidson). Her perfect life begins to unravel when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), a girlfriend who changes everything. After a tense introduction, Laura becomes convinced Cherry is hiding something.

Is she a social climber or is Laura imagining it? As 25M-plus viewers have thus far discovered, the truth is a matter of perspective in the show.

Wright shared a first clip from the series as she was honored at the Monte Carlo TV Festival back in June. The Girlfriend was created by Naomi Sheldon and produced by Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios. Jonathan Cavendish and Caroline Norris serve as producers. Wright, Will Tennant, Phil Robertson, John Zois, Dave Clarke, Gabbie Asher, and Michelle Frances are executive producers.

Prime Video does not routinely break out viewing figures, although we have previously broken stories about the worldwide success of The Culpables franchise, another of its international hits.
