Man, 51, dead after ‘unprovoked attack’ in Richmond Hill, 1 arrested, police say

A 54-year-old man has died after an “unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill on Wednesday and a suspect has been arrested, York Regional Police say.
The attack happened outside on Lorraine Street, near Yonge Street and Elgin Mills Road E., according to Duty Insp. Ken Golding, spokesperson for York Regional Police.
Police were called to the area shortly before 5 p.m. for a report of an assault.
When officers arrived, they found the man with serious injuries. York Regional Paramedics took him in life-threatening condition to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Golding said police do not yet know where the victim lived. His name has not been released and police still have to notify next of kin.
Attack ‘was between 2 strangers,’ police say
The suspect was arrested nearby. Golding said police are not looking for any additional suspects. The person’s name has not been released and there’s no word on charges.
“At this time, it appears that the attack was unprovoked and it was between two strangers,” Golding told reporters near the scene.
Golding said there is no risk to the public, but residents should expect a large police presence in the area. The homicide unit is investigating and forensic identification services are on the scene, he said.
Officers were in the area on Wednesday night, seeking witnesses and looking for surveillance camera and dashboard camera video, he added.
