Two-time All-Star Greenwell dead at 62

Mike Greenwell has died at the age of 62.

The two-time All-Star outfielder had been diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer in August.

A native of Louisville, Greenwell spent the entirety of his 12-year career with the Boston Red Sox.

Greenwell made his big league debut in 1985 and spent his first full season in the majors in 1987. He finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

The following season saw Greenwell’s best single-season campaign. He batted .325 with 192 hits, 22 home runs, 119 runs batted in, an OPS of .946 and a 7.5 WAR. Greenwell finished as runner-up in AL Most Valuable Player voting to Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco.

Greenwell won four AL East titles with the Red Sox and was a member of the team that went to the 1986 World Series where they ultimately fell to the New York Mets. He retired following the 1996 season.

For his career, Greenwell hit .303 with 1,400 hits, 130 home runs, 726 runs batted in and an OPS of .831.
