Portland is, according to the president of the United States, “burning to the ground.”
The reality, however, feels a lot different. But how can you be sure? A new website, isportlandburning.com seeks to answer this question.
How? With live cameras of the city, fact-checked claims and a live map of fire incidents in the city.
The conclusion of the website? No.
Portland has a history of useful websites — isatrainblocking11th.com may no longer be functional, but isitsnowinginpdx.com is still working (and sorry, the answer to that is no).
Jaryn Barton created the website with his dad, who is choosing to remain anonymous.
“My dad had the original idea, inspired by ‘Will It Snow In Portland?,’ to create a site in response to recent rhetoric about Portland coming from the Trump administration,” Barton said.
He has lived in Portland his entire life and works for a social services nonprofit.
“Me and my dad wanted to make a simple, centralized place where people can see the reality of our city,” Barton said, “grounded in facts, context and care for the community we live in.”
