Spanish holiday hotspots are set to be hit with “very heavy and persistent rains” this week while some areas have been placed under storm warnings. Forecasters have warned the weather could result in “local flash flooding” in certain areas.

The south east of the country which includes popular destinations such as Alicante, Benidorm and Valencia have all been placed under yellow alerts which come into force from tomorrow, October 9.

Amber warnings have also been issued for Ibiza and Forementera in the Balearic Islands with 100mm of rain forecast in the space of four hours.

Aemet, Spain’s national meteorological agency, has issued a special advisory which warns of “very heavy and persistent rains”, coming into force at the end of October 8 and lasting until “at least Sunday October 12”.

The weather is due to “a powerful anticyclone to the north” which will bring “abundant moisture to the Mediterranean coast.”

Aemet said: “Very heavy and persistent rainfall affecting mainly the eastern third of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands from late tomorrow, Wednesday 8, and at least until Sunday 12.

“The area with the greatest accumulations throughout the episode will a priori be around Cabo de la Nao, particularly the coastal and pre-coastal areas of southern Valencia and northern Alicante.”

Forecasters warn of “local flash flooding in low-lying areas, streams, and gullies, so the potential danger level of this situation is high.”

In the advisory, Aemet said: “ On Wednesday 8, the first showers are expected in the east of Castilla-La Mancha and inland areas of the Valencian Community, which will spread to coastal areas of Catalonia and the Valencian Community from the early hours of Thursday 9, and throughout the day to Ibiza and Formentera, Murcia, the eastern half of Andalusia and southern Castilla-La Mancha, with showers not ruled out in other areas of Castilla-La Mancha, inland Catalonia and the Central System.

“These showers are expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms and reach strong intensity, even very strong locally, most likely around Cabo de la Nao.”

By Friday the shows will be confined to the southeast of the peninsula, although they may reach the rest of the Alboran and Balearic Islands.

Conditions are expected to be unstable going into the weekend and people are urged to monitor weather forecasts closely.
