There are some actors whom every single director in the industry would jump at the chance to have on their cast, and Meryl Streep is probably at the top of that list.
Ranging from Michael Cimino to Clint Eastwood, Streep has worked tirelessly to cement her position as one of the greatest actors of her generation, earning widespread critical acclaim and a crazy total of accolades along the way. Currently set to reprise her iconic role in The Devil Wears Prada sequel, it doesn’t look like she plans on stopping anytime soon.
Over the years, many prominent directors have expressed their wish to work alongside Streep, but collaborations are a two-way street. That’s exactly why, in a conversation with The Talks, the multi-Oscar-winning star once revealed that she was interested in contributing to a project directed by none other than Martin Scorsese, if he ever considered a goddamn non-male-centric story.
That’s a tough ask from the director of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street, which is why Streep doesn’t really have high hopes for it. However, she is also looking forward to reuniting with Wes Anderson (with whom she worked on Fantastic Mr Fox), which might turn into a shitstorm given his recent track record, but if anyone can save him, it’s Streep.
Streep said: “Yes, I would like Martin Scorsese to be interested in a female character once in a while, but I don’t know if I’ll live that long. There are also a lot of wonderful directors that I would love to work with again. I love Spike Jonze. I loved working with Wes Anderson, but I was a fox, so I would like to work with him as a human sometime.”
There are other filmmakers who have also received a message from Streep about her willingness to work with them, the unlikeliest of whom might just be James Gunn. During an interview with Nick Viall, Gunn said that Streep had reached out to him about a possible collaboration in the future, which sounds like it can go either fucking way, given that they work in such different sectors of the industry.
“I would love to work with all sorts of people,” Gunn said. “Yeah, Meryl Streep, I would love to work with. She once sent word that she would love to work with me. I’m like, ‘Oh, that would be incredible.’ I love Meryl Streep, she’s one of the greatest actors ever. There’s a million actors I’d love to work with, and quite a few I’d never work with.”
Gunn, who is currently engaged with the DC cinematic universe and whose recent take on Superman became one of the highest-grossing films of the year, might not really get the opportunity to present Streep with a screenplay she’s interested in for a long time. Of course, there’s always a chance we get her signed to a DC project, and who am I kidding, she’ll probably fucking nail that as well and end up winning yet another Oscar.
