Ruthie’s All-Day and Our Mom Eugenia made it in The Washington Post’s new “40 Best Restaurants in and Around D.C.” list.
Departing Post food critic Tom Sietsema featured the two restaurants in his annual list of the top 40 restaurants across D.C., Maryland and Virginia, which came out yesterday (Wednesday).
Sietsema has shared high praises over the years for Ruthie’s, the Southern-inspired homestyle eatery at 3411 5th Street S., and Our Mom Eugenia, the comforting, family-owned Greek restaurant at 4044 Campbell Avenue.
In the new guide, the critic praised ARLnow reader favorite Ruthie’s for its “heaping helpings of food with mass appeal.” It’s the restaurant’s second time making The Washington Post’s top 40 roundup in the past three years, with an earlier feature in 2023.
“I’m talking crisp-fluffy hush puppies veined with shrimp and charred jalapeño — the puppies bite back! — and meaty chicken wings you can cool down in a dip of ranch dressing,” Sietsema wrote. “Also, a few things for light appetites, foremost limey tuna tartare and bountiful salads.”
Down in Shirlington, the reviewer revealed that he frequently visits at Our Mom Eugenia for happy hour, casual dinner or a bite before seeing a performance at the nearby Signature Theatre.
“My steadies on the menu encompass herbed lentil soup, airy pink whipped fish roe, the Greek salad built for two, and a juicy half-chicken paired with roast potatoes and soft green beans cooked with tomato and onions,” Sietsema wrote.
Last year’s dining guide featured just one Arlington eatery: Padaek, the popular Lao and Thai restaurant whose RAMMY award-winning founder and chef, Seng Luangrath, is credited with introducing Lao cuisine to the D.C. region.
Falls Church also received some love in the new guide, accounting for two more of the reviewer’s nine Virginia favorites.
The upscale Nue: Elegantly Vietnamese (944 W. Broad Street) received a feature, as did one of Eden Center’s newest restaurants, Banh Mi Oi. The family-owned shop at 6795 Wilson Blvd packs “so much flavor on so much bread,” Sietsema wrote.
