France could move five points clear in its 2026 World Cup qualification group on Friday when it plays host to Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes. Les Bleus are already three points ahead of the competition in Group D, but have a chance to truly stamp some authority in their bid to secure a place in North America next year.

Didier Deschamps’ men are the only side in Group D to have won each of their opening qualifiers, most recently defeating second-place Iceland 2-1 last month. Azerbaijan, on the other hand, has taken just a single point from its two games thus far and is already reaching the desperation stage if it can’t end that wait for a win soon.

The odds of that drought ending this week appear slim when examining the history between these two nations. It’s been 30 years since France last faced Azerbaijan, but that most recent encounter ended in a dominant 10-0 win for the two-time world champions.

Deschamps will be without several prominent names, including Champions League-winner Ousmane Dembele, Marcus Thuram, and Bradley Barcola in attack. However, Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta will look to make a big impact in their absence as the FA Cup winner looks to make his international bow at 28.
