Ex-49ers star suspended for chasing, threatening ref after game

Former San Francisco 49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw finally suited up for his new team on Sunday — but his second game as a Bronco will have to wait for a suspension.

The NFL announced it is suspending Greenlaw for Denver’s Week 8 game against the Cowboys because the linebacker “chased after referee Brad Allen and verbally threatened him as he tried to leave the field,” the league’s statement read. According to multiple reports, Greenlaw immediately appealed the suspension.

The incident occurred after the Broncos came back from a 19-0 deficit against the New York Giants to win 33-32 on the final play of regulation. CBS News Colorado reporter Alex Wilcox captured video of the interaction between Greenlaw and Allen after Denver kicker Wil Lutz’s buzzer-beating field goal.

Something caught my eye from Lutz’s game-winning kick yesterday:

After the play, Dre Greenlaw runs after the ref, yelling at him, and the ref actually throws a flag.

It was after the play, and the game was over, so idk what happens.

Just a fine for Greenlaw? Something more? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/LqFTfPV0vV

Greenlaw is among a wave of Broncos players who race past Allen to celebrate, but Greenlaw is seen looking directly at Allen and saying something in his direction as other players storm past. Then, as Allen runs away from the area, Greenlaw follows at pace, eventually getting Allen to turn his head. Greenlaw then points at Allen as he continues to talk. Whatever he said led Allen to throw a penalty flag, even long after the game had ended, and point directly at Greenlaw for an exaggerated moment.

Greenlaw left the 49ers to sign with the Broncos on a three-year, $35 million deal in March but missed the first six games after he tore his quad this offseason. In his first game back, Greenlaw tallied six tackles and one quarterback hit for Denver, which improved to 5-2 with the win.
