‘Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight’
Based on Alexandra Fuller’s memoir, Embeth Davidtz’s coming-of-age film centers on 8-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter), a White girl growing up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In 1980 in the waning days of White rule, Bobo is torn between her mother (Davidtz), determined to keep loved ones and their farm safe, and her Black friends wanting to reclaim their land.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘Eleanor the Great’
Scarlett Johansson’s moving directorial debut stars June Squibb as the 94-year-old title character, who moves to New York City after the death of her best friend. A mix-up at a Jewish community center leads to Eleanor passing off her pal’s Holocaust survivor story as her own, a lie that spirals out of control and leads to her befriending a young journalist (Erin Kellyman).
Where to watch: Netflix
‘Ella McCay’
Oscar-winning filmmaker James L. Brooks returns to the director’s chair for the first time in 15 years with this feel-good political dramedy. Emma Mackey stars as an idealistic lieutenant governor who gets the top job when her boss (Albert Brooks) heads to Washington for a Cabinet position, but she runs into family issues and some scandal.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’
In the dark comedy, best actress nominee Rose Byrne plays a therapist whose ceiling caves in while her husband is away for work. It’s not even close to the worst thing that befalls her in a series of increasingly nutty situations, like moving with her sick daughter to a hotel and fostering a passive-aggressive relationship with her own therapist (Conan O’Brien).
Where to watch: HBO Max
‘Mother of Flies’
The Adams filmmaking family, the folks behind the rad “Hellbender,” returns with freakier folk horror. When medicine can’t treat her cancer, a dying youngster (Zelda Adams) reaches out to a forest witch (Toby Poser) who uses dark magic to cheat death, but there’s a serious cost involved in this rich and artfully crafted scary movie.
Where to watch: Shudder
‘The Queen of Chess’
Have you been missing “The Queen’s Gambit”? This new Netflix documentary centers on Judit Polgár, the Hungarian schoolgirl and prodigious chess player who took on all comers. The movie examines her success in the male-dominated world and chronicles her matches against fellow grandmaster Garry Kasparov beginning in 1994.
Where to watch: Netflix
‘Relationship Goals’
There’s a religious tinge (albeit not overly so) with this romantic comedy starring Kelly Rowland as a morning show producer eyeing a key promotion. The company brings in her cheating ex (Method Man) as competition to be showrunner, and they have to team up for a piece about a pastor’s Bible-themed self-help relationship tome.
Where to watch: Prime Video
‘Splitsville’
This wild divorce comedy isn’t your average Valentine’s movie, but that’s a good thing. A gonzo situation inspires Ashley (Adria Arjona) to divorce Carey (Kyle Marvin). Carey turns to married friends Julie (Dakota Johnson) and Paul (director Michael Angelo Corvino), learns about their open marriage, and a complicated love trapezoid ensues.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘Tin Soldier’
The action drama features a surprisingly stacked cast, led by Jamie Foxx as a charismatic but dangerous cult leader. When he launches a Waco-like standoff with authorities, a former soldier (Scott Eastwood) affiliated with the group is sent in to take him down in a movie also starring Robert De Niro, John Leguizamo and Rita Ora.
Where to watch: Hulu
‘The Wrecking Crew’
Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa are believable brothers – and have quite the bickering bromance in this fun action flick. The buff pair play estranged Hawaiian siblings who reunite after a decade apart to investigate their private-eye dad’s death, uncover a criminal conspiracy, fight ninjas and leave a trail of destruction and mayhem in their wake.
