On Thursday 1 July 2010, Raoul Moat, a physically imposing ex-bouncer from Newcastle, was released from prison after serving a short sentence for assault. The next day, outraged by the news that his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart was now seeing Chris Brown – a man Moat believed to be a police officer – the 37-year-old tracked them both down and shot them. Samantha survived the attack but Brown, who wasn’t actually a police officer, did not.
