Meta to build $1.5 billion AI data center in El Paso, creating nearly 2,000 jobs

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, is set to build a $1.5 billion AI data center in El Paso.
The facility will be constructed on a 1,083-acre plot of land west of U.S. Highway 54, following approval from the City of El Paso.
The Borderplex Alliance, an economic development agency, announced that the project will create nearly 2,000 jobs, with 1,800 positions for construction and 100 additional staff members to operate the center.
Borderplex explained that the AI data center will be part of the infrastructure supporting Meta’s AI technology and apps.
Bradley Davis, Meta’s Director of Data Center Community and Economic Development, emphasized the importance of a “shovel-ready site” with robust infrastructure and community partners. He also noted that Meta plans to restore 200% of the water used in operations to the local watershed.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised the investment, stating, “Meta’s $1.5 billion investment in El Paso further cements our great state as the nation’s leader in artificial intelligence and innovation while creating new, good-paying jobs for Texans.”
El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson expressed pride in hosting the new data center, highlighting the project’s potential to generate lasting economic benefits.
El Paso County Judge Ricardo A. Samaniego called the investment “historic,” noting its role in elevating the region and empowering the workforce.
Jon Barela, CEO of the Borderplex Alliance, described the announcement as a “game-changer” for El Paso, positioning the region as a leader in technology-driven industries.
Kelly Tomblin, President of EP Electric, assured that El Paso Electric consumers would not see a rate increase, as the company is committed to reliability and ensuring Meta bears the full cost of its operations in the region.
According to the Borderplex Alliance, the deal was made possible thanks to the synergy between the State of Texas, El Paso County, and the City of El Paso.
The news comes as our neighboring leaders in Dona Ana County approved Project Jupiter, a plan to build a $165 billion AI data center in Santa Teresa.
That project sparked backlash from some community members.
