ChristianaCare Honored With Workday Health Innovation Award

Maria Brown, MSN, RN

ChristianaCare has been recognized with the 2025 Workday Health Innovation Award for Powering Innovation. Caregivers from Nursing and the Human Resources Technical team leveraged Workday capabilities to better support nursing professional development at ChristianaCare.

The teams established a strong cross-functional workflow as they identified areas of need within the Professional Advancement program for clinical nurses. The past structure made it challenging to effectively keep track of nurses’ progress, and Workday was identified as a buildable solution.

“By using Workday Extend to create our vision, we are empowering our nurses to continue their professional development journey and we can recognize and celebrate their work by referring to the information we have,” said Maria Brown, MSN, RN, PCCN, CNL, NEA-BC, lead Nursing Professional Excellence manager.

Tamekia Chisholm, MSN, APRN

Brown, in partnership with Tamekia Chisholm, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, PCCN, NPD-BC, director of Nursing Professional Development, Don DiGiovanni, vice president of Human Resources Shared Services, and other clinical nurses and leaders, created a digital portfolio platform where nurses can submit, store and review advancement materials online.

This streamlined process helps caregivers highlight personal and professional achievements and improve retention. Between fiscal year 2023 and fiscal year 2024, RN III promotions increased by 28% and RN IV promotions by 36%, aided by access to the digital profiles and leader support.

“Our caregivers throughout the health system know the business best in regard to barriers, what is working well, and opportunities for improvement,” said DiGiovanni.

“When we work closely with other caregivers across the organization, great things happen. This solution would not be possible without this teamwork crossing over multiple departments.”

These improved Workday solutions have also helped support better data collection to inform decisions and showcase areas of improvement. The data contributes to the Magnet dashboard, which provides information for Magnet document submissions, the Nursing annual report and opportunities to celebrate professional development within practice areas. Caregivers throughout the system, including non-nursing employees, are encouraged to use Workday Careers to showcase their achievements as well.

“Empowering caregivers through professional development not only elevates their skills – it ignites a ripple of excellence,” Chisholm said. “The most rewarding part is witnessing their dedication blossom into extraordinary care, one inspired moment at a time.”
