Bristol are battling injuries again but the Bears have tempered their expansive style and are capable of pushing Gloucester all the way at Kingsholm.

After going down to Friday’s visitors in the Premiership Cup, the Cherry & Whites have lost their last four matches.

Their most encouraging performance came at home to Northampton a couple of weeks ago, when they almost recovered from 31-7 down at the break but lost 37-35.

There was a significant turnover of the playing staff in the summer and, aside from All Blacks prop Nepo Laulala, Gloucester’s incomings lack forward power and leadership experience.

Bristol are without half-backs Harry Randall and AJ MacGinty for Friday’s encounter, while Scotland’s Tom Jordan is suspended.

But Bears coach Pat Lam said he was proud of his team after they battled past Exeter 18-14 last Saturday and they are worth supporting with a seven-point start on the handicap.

Newcastle Red Bulls vs Northampton Saints preview

Friday nights under the Kingston Park lights brought Newcastle Falcons plenty of joy over the years and the rebanded Red Bulls will be targeting similar success.

Newcastle were outclassed 39-17 by Saracens in their first home game of the season and come into Friday’s fixture against Northampton following a 57-5 drubbing at Sale.

The Saints squandered a 33-7 lead to draw their opener against Exeter 33-33 and almost did the same the following week, when they hung on to beat Gloucester by two points.

However, even injuries couldn’t stop them defeating Leicester 32-26 last time and a strong summer recruitment drive appears to have them edging back towards something similar to the side who won the Premiership in 2023-24.

The Red Bulls should show spirit early on but the Saints’ extra class should result in a handsome away success.
