iPhone crash detection alerts authorities to Toledo wreck that knocked out power

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A smartphone feature was the first to alert first responders to an overnight Toledo crash that temporarily knocked out power to the surrounding neighborhood, officers said.

The car crash happened near the intersection of Bancroft and Upton just after 1 a.m. on Friday morning. Police told 13 Action News that everyone inside the car at the time of the crash took off from the scene.

The crash took the power out from Upton to Parkside overnight, but Toledo Edison crews arrived to restore power. Crews stabilized the pole and planned for a replacement.

Authorities were alerted to the wreck through iPhone crash detection, police said, and the operator could hear people talking and asking if everyone was okay. When first responders arrived at the scene, everyone was gone.

The car has temporary Indiana plates, but had not been reported as stolen, police said.
