Water restrictions end for Mission and Abbotsford

Water restrictions for Mission and Abbotsford residents came to an end on Wednesday (Oct. 15).

The City of Mission shared the update on social media Thursday (Oct. 16) after over five months of restrictions.

“We appreciate everyone’s efforts to conserve and reserve water during the dry summer months. Your commitment helps ensure a sustainable water supply for our community all year long,” the city said.

The restrictions have also been lifted in the Clearbrook Waterworks District.

The two cities entered stage one restrictions on May 1, which limited lawn watering to once per week. Stage two restrictions began on July 28 due to dry conditions and rising temperatures, which included prohibitions on lawn watering and washing driveways.

Water restrictions follow four stages, which are tied to multiple factors.

“Water restrictions are based on several considerations (including) snowpack; current and forecasted available supply – Dickson Lake level, Cannell Lake level, and the Abbotsford-Sumas aquifer levels; antecedent weather and soil conditions, precipitation and temperature forecast, extreme heat warnings; Norrish Creek flows; Provincial drought levels; recent water consumption and forecasted trends; customer compliance with restrictions; and any other factor the Engineer considers to be relevant for making a determination,” the Abbotsford-Mission Water and Sewer Services website reads.

Staged water restrictions were modified in 2024 so that the regional water supply could better respond to more challenging drought conditions anticipated as an impact of climate change.
