Standing in the middle of a circle of his players and staff members, Amorim said: “I don’t like farewells, but if you guys are humble you will be champions.

“It has to be, the difference between us and the rest is way too big. It’s going to be hard, it’s going to be hard for everybody.

“But guys, we are going to win this f*cking league, you guys are unbelievable.”

Amorim’s heartfelt and sincere speech underlines the strong connection he developed with his players in Lisbon.

“This today was much better than on Tuesday [4-1 win over Manchester City]. What I felt here today, those 3rd and 4th goals… it was football‘s best moment,” he added.

“You will have everything that you need from me. Everything. I will be rooting more for you guys than for me. Quaresma, Geny, Marcus … everybody has to bring them up when they need it.

“Because you will need Marcus, and you will need Quaresma, and you will need Geny. My boys, thank you for everything. The farewells are over, this is it.”

Since his move to Manchester, Amorim has come under increasing pressure for a string of dismal results.
