THE BREAKDOWN: Severe Risk, where are the storms coming from?
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) –
A severe weather chance is in the forecast Saturday evening. With the chance for damaging winds and even a localized tornado spin-up, let’s break down this forecast.
Friday afternoon we are watching this low pressure system over Kansas as the source of what will bring storms to the area.
A low pressure system off to our west filters in lots of warm, moist air from the Gulf as southerly winds flow into the Mid-South.
Meanwhile, the low brings in much colder and drier air behind it, allowing these two airmasses to clash. And where they do is where storms begin to fire up.
The current timeframe for storms moving through the Mid-South is as early as 3pm in western areas before clearing out of eastern areas just after midnight. Memphis and Shelby County, this is around sunset.
So what do we expect from this?
While this isn’t forecast to be a widespread and significant event for everybody, as the line of storms rolls through the Mid-South around sunset, some areas with damaging wind gusts are possible. While a localized tornado spin-up cannot be ruled out, it remains a lower end risk.
