Theo James’ Vampire Franchise-Ender Is a Sudden Streaming Hit in the U.S.

The ever-brilliant Theo James delighted Netflix audiences back in 2024 with the series spin-off of Guy Ritchie‘s The Gentlemen. So popular was the show, topping the Netflix charts across the world, that a second season was greenlit, and fans can’t wait. There is currently no exact release date for the return of James’ Eddie and Kaya Scodelario‘s Susie, with it predicted that the second season will debut in the second half of 2026. In the meantime, fans are checking out other entries from James’ filmography, with a forgotten franchise-ender subsequently surprising the streaming charts.
Underworld: Blood Wars, directed by Anne Foerster and starring James, is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Pluto in the U.S. at the time of writing. Panned by both critics and audiences, the fifth installment in the franchise is cited as the final nail in the Underworld coffin. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned just 21% from critics, with a 49% rating from audiences doing little to revive any sort of positive reputation. The critics’ consensus on the site reads, “Underworld: Blood Wars delivers another round of the stylized violence that the series is known for, but — like many fifth franchise installments — offers precious little of interest to the unconverted.” The movie’s synopsis reads:
“Death dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) must fend off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the vampire faction that betrayed her. Joining forces with allies David (Theo James) and Thomas (Peter Andersson), she embarks on a quest to end the eternal war between the two races, even if it means making the ultimate sacrifice.”
Was ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ a Box Office Hit?
Despised by audiences and critics, Underworld: Blood Wars is certainly considered a failure. But does that mean the film flopped at the box office? Surprisingly, Blood Wars was actually a small success in theaters, turning a $35 million budget into a decent global haul of $81.2 million. Split between a domestic haul of $30.3 million and a further $50.9 million from overseas markets. On its opening weekend in January 2017, the film finished a respectable fourth in the domestic rankings with $13.6 million, losing out to the children’s favorite Sing, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the first-placed Hidden Figures.
