Guerrero Jr. homers at WBC for Dominican Republic

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a towering two-run home run for the Dominican Republic on Sunday afternoon in their World Baseball Classic game against the Netherlands.

With the Dominican leading 2-1 in the third, the Toronto Blue Jays slugger got a hanging slider from right-hander Eric Mendez and crushed it into the left field seats just inside the foul pole to extend the lead to 4-1.

Guerrero joyfully rounded the bases and was met by his Dominican teammates outside the dugout, where he put on the team’s home run jacket in a home run celebration reminiscent of the Blue Jays’.

The blast came after Guerrero got the Dominican Republic on the board in the first inning with an RBI single.

The 26-year-old was 1-for-4 with three RBIs in his country’s 12-3 tournament-opening victory over Nicaragua on Friday.

Guerrero had three hits in nine at-bats with the Blue Jays in spring training before heading to the WBC.

After Sunday’s game against the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic will be back in action on Monday afternoon against Israel.
