A man brandished a knife in a Loughborough street and shouted threats towards another male during a row over a broken window.

The incident happened on Saturday, July 5 when a resident in Loughborough’s Moor Lane heard shouting outside and filmed 37-year-old Shafiq Ahmed as he was yelling threats and waving a large knife towards another man. That man never gave a statement to Leicestershire Police.

Ahmed appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Friday (October 24) where he pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public and threatening behaviour for the incident.

Prosecutor Simran Kaur said: “A member of the public saw Mr Ahmed in the street, brandishing a knife and shouting.

“Mr Ahmed had had an altercation with a friend over a broken window and money being owed. Mr Ahmed’s friend is not supportive of the prosecution.”

Commenting on the knife, she added: “It was of a substantial size and he was brandishing it in a threatening way.”

But Alison Hubbard, representing Ahmed of Grantham Road, Whatton, in the Vale of Belvoir, said it was incorrect to describe the other man as Ahmed’s “friend”.

She explained: “The circumstances are that Mr Ahmed is clearly not well – I think he has some mental health problems.

“The male described as a friend is not a friend. He is a man of dubious character who is not averse himself to using knives and making threats.

“All [Ahmed] was trying to do was to get him to move away. It’s telling that the male has refused to make a statement to the police and says they are reconciled.”

She added that the resident who filmed the incident did so from a window and was never in any danger from Ahmed.

She said Ahmed needed help for alcohol addiction and other mental health issues and asked for the case to be adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

The magistrates agreed and Ahmed is due back at the court in late November for sentencing. He was released on bail with a condition not to return to Moor Lane or contact the witness who filmed the altercation.
