Mackenzie Dern became just the sixth different name to become strawweight champion Saturday when she defeated Virna Jandiroba at UFC 321 to claim the vacant belt.
After Zhang Weili left the belt behind to move up a weight class, Dern (16-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) stepped in to start a new chapter at Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. She did so with a unanimous decision win over Jandiroba (22-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC) to not only capture gold, but also go 2-0 in their series after a December 2020 triumph in their first meeting.
