The Orange (3-6, 1-5 ACC) have lost five straight games after their most recent game against North Carolina. Syracuse coach Fran Brown started true freshman walk-on Joe Filardi in the 27-10 loss. Filardi completed 4-of-18 passes for 39 yards, adding eight yards with his legs.
Five straight losses were enough for Brown to make changes to his offensive staff. First-year receivers coach/passing game coordinator Myles White was fired, with quality control coach Josh Gattis taking his spot. Gattis has multiple offensive coordinator stops, highlighted by winning the Broyles Award (best assistant coach in college football) in 2021 when he was Michigan’s OC.
Brown also reassigned quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile to tight ends coach. Former tight ends coach Michael Johnson will take over as the team’s quarterbacks coach.
Filardi won’t start Saturday against the Hurricanes. Rickie Collins will get the start, Brown announced Thursday during his weekly radio show on TK99. Collins has started four games since Steve Angeli’s season-ending injury. In that span Collins completed 78-of-142 passes (54.9%) for 858 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The LSU transfer called his time at Syracuse “humbling”. After a week of sitting on the sidelines, he’ll get ready for Miami with Johnson as his QBs coach. Johnson spent time in the NFL as the quarterbacks coach for Michael Vick in Atlanta and Drew Brees in San Diego.
