Europe lays down red lines on Ukraine in rebuke to Trump plan – POLITICO

“Currently, there is an understanding that the American proposals may include a number of elements based on Ukrainian perspectives and critical for Ukrainian national interests,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X. “Further work is ongoing to make all elements truly effective in achieving the main goal anticipated by our people: to finally put an end to the bloodshed and war.”

U.S. Senator Angus King, an independent who has been critical of the proposals, told POLITICO that he hopes “after consultation with Ukraine and the Europeans, a more fair and responsible agreement will emerge.”

“Everyone wants peace and for the conflict to end — most especially the Ukrainian people who have borne the brunt of this unconscionable attack on their country — but that peace must be both just and lasting,” he said.

“The proposed plan is certainly not just, and, if history is any guide, is unlikely to be lasting,” King added.

The EU’s Costa said the leaders of the 27 EU countries will hold further discussions on Monday in Angola, on the sidelines of a Europe-Africa summit, to work on a counterproposal on ending the Ukraine conflict.

Trump, meanwhile, appears to have backed away from a Thursday deadline for Ukraine to accept the terms of the U.S. proposal, saying the deal is “not my final offer.”

However, in a post on his Truth Social network on Sunday, the American president hit out at Brussels and Kyiv. “Ukraine ‘leadership’ has expressed zero gratitude for our efforts, and Europe continues to buy oil from Russia,” he claimed.
